Why change tyres at 3mm ?
In an emergency braking situation at 70mph a tyre with 1.6mm of tread depth, could take up to 44 metres to stop than a tyre with 3mm of tread and could still be travelling at 50mph at the point where the 3mm tyre had stopped
Vehicle and Tyre Manufactures recommend that where
practical you should always fit the best tyres to the rear
with the main reasons for this being -
With worn tyres across the rear axle there is a greater
risk of experiencing "over-steer
(losing control of the rear end)
Cold weather tyre work better than summer tyres at temperatures of less than 7 degrees C
From 50mph in the wet they can stop up to 7 metres
shorter than a summer tyre
A tyre that is under inflated by 20% reduces tyre life by 30% and increases fuel consumption by 30%
At 70 mph the average NEW car tyre can disperse up to
15 litres of water per second
At 1.6mm that drops to 3 litres per second
